Vic: Workers rushed to hospital after ammonia leak

Twenty-five people have been rushed to hospital after an ammonia leak in a Melbourne
abattoir this morning.

Ambulance spokesman JAMES HOWE says all of the patients suffered respiratory irritation
and had to be given oxygen at the scene in Laverton North, in Melbourne's west.

Mr HOWE says 100 workers were evacuated from Diamond Valley Pork at about 8.40am (AEDT).

He says the patients had inhaled ammonia fumes, which caused breathing difficulties,
nausea and headaches.

Most people were treated at the scene, however the 25 patients taken to hospital are
all in a stable condition.

A Diamond Valley Pork spokeswoman says the cause of the leak is not known.

Police say the leak is now under control and investigators will try to determine what happened.
