Fed: ALP begins asylum debate at caucus
Federal Labor MPs have begun debating the ALP's support for the government's hard-lineon asylum seekers amid opposition to the policy from both the front and back bench.
In what is shaping up to be a fiery debate, Labor MPs filed into caucus in Canberrain the leadup to tomorrow's resumption of parliament.
Labor aboriginal affairs spokeswoman CARMEN LAWRENCE is expected to lead the chargeto abolish the ALP's support for immigration detention, backed by Tasmanian backbenchersDUNCAN KERR and HARRY QUICK, and veteran NSW MP LEO MCLEAY.
But New South Wales frontbencher MARK LATHAM will oppose any attempt to water down the policy.
Opposition Leader SIMON CREAN says he wants management of immigration detention centresreturned to the Australian Protective Services, while Woomera would be mothballed.
