Qld: Commissioner says police officer was ambushed

Queensland Police Commissioner BOB ATKINSON says a senior police officer who was shotand killed near Caboolture, north of Brisbane, had walked straight into an ambush.

Senior Sergeant PERRY JAMES IRWIN died yesterday morning when he and two other officerswere called to investigate shots being fired in bushland near Caboolture.

The 42-year-old married father of four was killed by two shots to the chest -- despitethe fact he was wearing a bulletproof vest.

Mr ATKINSON says he believes Sergeant IRWIN was deliberately ambushed.

He'd left his police car and was searching bushland when the 21-year-old gunman steppedout from behind a tree and opened fire.

The gunman's body was discovered in the bush not far from the scene of the shooting.
