Thomas and Elizabeth Tierney have pledged $1.5 million to help build a chancellor's residence on the UCI campus. The residence will be built in University Hills.
The Oaks International Grand Prix Equestrian Show raised more than $100,000 to benefit seven local charities, including: Boys and Girls Club of Capistrano Valley, Drug Use is Life Abuse, Fran Joswick Therapeutic Riding Center, Mission San Juan Capistrano, the National Water Research Institute, Rancho Mission Viejo Land Conservancy, and the Reeve-Irvine Research Center at UCI.
The Charter Oak Foundation gave $2,000 to Big Brothers/Sisters of Orange County to aid in the recruitment of volunteers.
The Irvine Unified School District and the Irvine Public Schools Foundation approved a proposal by Irvine Realtor, Debbie Friend, through which she will donate 10% of her real estate commission to an Irvine school for each referral that closes escrow with her. The donation will be allocated to the referring person's school of choice, in his or her name.
MonierLifetile has pledged $100,000 worth of roof tile annually to cover homes built in the U.S. by Habitat for Humanity volunteers.
The HealthCare Foundation for Orange County, Santa Ana, issued a grant to UCI Medical Center's Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, Orange, allowing the center to purchase upgrades for the diagnostic automation of laboratory equipment.
Albertson's Food & Drug Stores and the Pillsbury Company raised $10,000 to support the Big Brothers/Big Sisters of Orange County. Funds were raised through the in-store promotion, "Phone-A-Giggle." Pillsbury and Albertson's made a donation for each giggle recorded through the promotional contest.
The 1999 Jewish Federation of Orange County received pledges totaling $2,161,009, making this year's campaign its largest ever. Proceeds benefit eight local community service agencies: B'nai B'rith Youth Organization, Bureau of Jewish Education, Hillel Foundation, Jewish Community Center, Jewish Family Service, Hebrew Academy, Morasha, Tarbut V'Torah, and also the United Jewish Communities.
Mitsubishi Motors, via eBay Internet auction, donated $20,000 to Mothers Against Drunk Drivers (MADD).
Orange County Museum of Art in Newport Beach is receiving support from Robinsons May, allowing the museum to reinstate their "Free Tuesdays" program.
The Orange County/Long Beach branch of the Arthritis Foundation raised $80,000 to help fund research, patient education programs and local exercise classes for people with arthritis-related diseases.
Mervyns California's ChildSpree donated an average of $100 and a filled backpack for each of 80 kids from the Salvation Army. The money will be used for a discounted shopping spree given by Mervyns to ready the kids for the new school year.
Saddleback Memorial Medical Center is seeking volunteers to offer support to terminally ill patients, the hospice office, and bereavement programs.
